It was John Feilding Guice who helped Mr. J. D. Weeks to erect and man the tower. For years we were able to climb the tower and talk to the man on duty and observe the view. The ladder to the tower went straight up and was not side to side as is most towers. I have my Grand pa's retirment certificate when he retired fron the tower January 1st. 1957 after serving 5 years in the tower. More history can be obtained by contacting my father Loma D. Guice in Sicily Island. I believe the last tower attendent was Mr. White.

Are you in need, or, are you interested in knowing more about that oil and gas history? I have a background in old oil field sites and would volunteer to look into it if it was of interest to you.

Neat stuff. While in SIH on Feb. 13, I saw a large woodpecker, and allowed myself to fantasize about an Ivory Billed. It was just a large Pileated, of course, but one can dream. The gravel operations at the top have left a couple of nice ponds, and once you get down in the bottoms there are remnant sloughs and scars from Big Creek. Beavers will make ponds also, and I flushed a good number of wood ducks in one. This is a really neat spot.
